John is a senior litigation lawyer in the Saskatoon office where he acts as Counsel in complex commercial and contractual disputes, professional negligence, labour law, taxation, and First Nations litigation. 

John was called to the Bar in 1977, admitted as a Partner in 1980, and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1987. He transitioned to Of Counsel in 2018. 

Mr. Beckman has extensive experience acting as Counsel in complex commercial and contractual disputes, Professional Negligence, Labour Law, Tax and First Nations Litigation. 

He has appeared as Counsel before numerous Arbitration Boards, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Saskatchewan, the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan, the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. 

In addition, Mr. Beckman has appeared as Counsel before the Saskatoon Police Commission, the Saskatchewan Police Commission, the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board, the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Commission, the International Trade Tribunal, and the Indian Claims Commission. 

Represented clients include Wal-Mart Canada Corp., Deloitte, the University of Saskatchewan and Cameco Corporation.

John was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers™ in Canada 2025 in the fields of Bet-the-Company Litigation, Corporate and Commercial Litigation, and Labour and Employment Law for Saskatoon. He has been listed in Best Lawyers® since 2006. 

John has recently been ranked again in the 2025 edition of Chambers Canada Legal Guide. He is ranked Band 3 for Litigation: General Commercial in Saskatchewan. In the review, 'John Beckman KC acts as counsel on a variety of disputes. Along with his handling of contractual and commercial disputes, he features on matters relating to tax and labour law, as well as First Nations litigation.' This is John's 10th year ranked.
