James is a partner in the Saskatoon office where he focuses on corporate governance and commercial real estate and financing, natural resources law and land development law.
James practices in the areas of corporate, commercial and transactional law with a focus on matters relating to corporate governance, commercial real estate and financings, natural resources law and securities law. His clients span many industries including but not limited to natural resources and mining, manufacturing, land development including capital projects, hospitality, franchises, and agriculture.
His work regularly includes general corporate structuring and re-structuring as well as organizational and governance matters. He has assisted clients with general business advice from initial incorporation, asset and share purchase situations, mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings using exemptions or prospectus, partnership agreements and commercial leasing issues. He also has extensive experience in First Nations Financing and unusual structured financing events. James has acted for numerous medium and large scale commercial organizations, both privately owned and TSX listed, as well has experience working with domestic and foreign based junior mining corporations.
James believes in contributing to the community in which he lives and practices. He is a former President and member of the P.O.W. City Kinsmen and served twice on TeleMiracle organizing committees, raising funds for Saskatchewan’s greatest needs. He provides regular governance advice to charities and community organizations as a contribution to the home where he lives and is raising his family.
James earned his Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1992 followed by his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan in 1993. He was admitted to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1994 following articling at McKercher LLP. He was invited to join the partnership in 2003.
James is proud to be one of McKercher LLP’s representatives for Lawyers Associated Worldwide, a global association of independent commercial law firms, and has developed connections with lawyers throughout many parts of the world as a result.

James has recently been ranked again in the 2025 edition of Chambers Canada Legal Guide. He is ranked Band 3 for Corporate/Commercial in Saskatchewan.
