March 9, 2016

McKercher LLP Civil LitigationThe monetary limit for civil claims at the Small Claims Court in Saskatchewan was increased from $20,000 to $30,000, effective February 4, 2016.  The increase to the monetary limit is a result of the Small Claims Review Project carried out ‎by the Ministry of Justice as a part of the Justice Innovation Agenda.   The stated goal of the Justice Innovation Agenda is to improve access to justice by providing more affordable and quick, citizen-centered dispute resolution processes.  ‎ Saskatchewan Small Claims legislation dates back to 1913 where the monetary limit was $50.  The limit increased to $100 in 1915, $200 in 1959, $500 in 1978, and $5,000 in 1989.  Following a Small Claims Review Report in 2005, the limit was increased to $10,000, $15,000 and $20,000 in 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively.
