Advancing Legal in Nuclear Energy: Chris J. Masich Attends National Program

May 26, 2025

McKercher LLP is proud to support Saskatoon Partner Chris J. Masich’s participation in the Canadian National Nuclear Energy Management School (NEMS) held at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) from May 26 to June 6, 2025. This two-week intensive program, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), marks its first occurrence outside Ontario, signifying a pivotal moment for nuclear energy education in Saskatchewan and Western Canada.

Program Overview

A press release, published on May 26th from the Government of Saskatchewan, explains that NEMS is designed for professionals to supplement their existing experience with a specific focus on nuclear energy. The program welcomed 50 participants from across Canada, representing Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and the Northwest Territories. With over 215 applications submitted, the selection process was highly competitive, reflecting the program’s esteemed reputation and strong national interest.

Impact of Involvement

Chris’ involvement in NEMS reflects his commitment to the industry and establishes McKercher LLP’s interest in being at the forefront of nuclear energy development in Saskatchewan. At this time, the province does not use nuclear energy. Hallee Mandryk, from CTV News Saskatoon, explains “this means that the province is in the process of creating laws and regulations around the resource, also known as a greenfield jurisdiction.” As Saskatchewan moves towards the possibility of integrating nuclear energy solutions, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), legal frameworks will play a crucial role in navigating regulatory, environmental, and commercial challenges. McKercher LLP’s engagement ensures our team is ready to advise clients in the evolving landscape.

Through his participation in NEMS, Chris is gaining valuable insights into nuclear energy policies, safety protocols, and international best practices.  In a response regarding his participation in this esteemed program, Chris shared:

“Attending the Canadian Nuclear Energy Management School has been a valuable experience, highlighting the importance of collaboration across diverse professional backgrounds. As a lawyer, I appreciate how engineers, scientists, regulators, and industry leaders work together to advance nuclear energy responsibly and safely. This experience has broadened my understanding of how legal, technical, and regulatory efforts intersect in the nuclear industry. I am confident that the insights gained will support my role in contributing to the sustainable and innovative growth of nuclear energy in Saskatchewan and beyond.”

Looking Ahead

As Saskatchewan positions itself as a leader in nuclear energy development, our firm's enhanced expertise ensures we can provide informed legal counsel on matters ranging from regulatory compliance to infrastructure development.

We congratulate Chris on completing this professional development program and look forward to leveraging this experience to better serve our clients in the dynamic field of nuclear energy.
