Commitment to Community: Launching the McKercher LLP Community Fund

Community involvement has always been a priority at McKercher. Partners, lawyers, students, staff—all share a passion for giving back to the community, each in their own way and according to their own interests. We support that commitment through the donation of time, resources and dollars.

As a firm, historically, we have been committed to supporting local, provincial and national non-profit organizations and charitable events. We look for ways to create opportunities, to build communities, to promote next generation volunteers. Supporting the communities in which we work and live is part of our prairie pride.

Our newly formed McKercher LLP Community Fund was created to invest in projects in our communities in a different way. Our fund supports initiatives that are aligned with our three pillars of investment and provide impact in our communities. Currently our diverse volunteer investment panel makes decisions regarding investments from our community fund. Decisions are made annually and announced and celebrated publicly. Investments from this fund are meant to fund projects or programs, not sponsored events, fundraisers, etc.

For 2023, our community fund will provide three (3) grants of $3,500 each. The intent for the grants is to benefit communities throughout Saskatchewan. The panel will consider regional distribution in awarding the grants. Applications for the 2023 intake were closed October 16th, 2023.

Grants are open to registered charities and incorporated non-profits in Saskatchewan, or regional and/or national charities and incorporated non-profits with operations in Saskatchewan. Applications are reviewed by a panel of volunteers from McKercher LLP with representation in both Saskatoon and Regina including staff, management and lawyers.

Pro Bono Initiatives

Saskatchewan is the fourth jurisdiction in Canada to adopt a coordinated approach to pro bono service delivery—and McKercher is one of the original signatories of the Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan (PBLS) Pledge. We firmly believe in the importance of pro bono work. The tradition recognizes the contribution members of our profession are able, often uniquely, to make on behalf of disadvantaged members of our society and the organizations that serve them. Our pro bono policy is well-established and clearly defined. It directly encourages and supports the participation of our lawyers in pro bono public activities, using the same high standards of service as paid legal services.

A Commitment to Legal Education

Our commitment to community includes the legal community. The firm continues to sponsor and fund the John A. Stack Memorial Lecture Series as well as the McKercher LLP Lecture Series at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. Many of our members have served as sessional lecturers at the U of S, not only in the College of Law, but also in the Colleges of Commerce, Veterinary Medicine and more. Our lawyers are also invited to share their experience and insights as guest speakers at professional and policy seminars and conferences across North America.
