Do I need a lawyer to get a divorce?

It is not mandatory for an individual to hire a lawyer to assist in obtaining a divorce, however it can be a complex process and it would likely be very difficult for a person to go through the process by themselves without legal representation. There are many issues that arise when a couple wants to get divorced (or “separated” in the case of a common-law couple) such as child support, spousal support, property division and parenting schedules. Obtaining the formal divorce and severing the marriage is a relatively simple procedure, but negotiating with the opposing party or bringing various court applications to deal with all the other issues is much more challenging and time consuming. It is highly recommended that you work with a lawyer who will be able to ensure that your interests are protected.
