Are there any restrictions in Saskatchewan on farm land ownership for non-residents of Canada?

Yes. The Saskatchewan Farm Security Act restricts foreign ownership of farm land in Saskatchewan. Under this Act, only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and 100% Canadian-owned companies can own more than 10 acres of farm land.

Foreign owners looking to buy farm land in Canada may make an application to the Farm Land Security Board for special permission to purchase more than 10 acres of land. However, the application must make a compelling case to be exempted. The Board has very discretionary powers to allow or deny an exemption or to impose specific conditions when allowing an exemption.

In recent years, Saskatchewan has increasingly become an attractive market for foreign investors, thanks in part to its agricultural sector. Investors interested in buying farm land in Saskatchewan can contact us to learn more about their options when purchasing farm land.
