What is no fault insurance?

No fault insurance is an all-inclusive insurance benefits package. It means that you are entitled to receive compensation from your insurance provider even if you are at fault for the incident or accident causing injury.

In Saskatchewan, the majority of people have no-fault insurance through SGI.  If you are injured in a car accident, no fault insurance generally restricts you from suing the person who caused the accident; instead you submit a claim and, if successful, you will be covered by the no-fault insurance provider. Furthermore, if you cause an accident which injures another person, you will not be liable for any costs or damages arising from the accident (other than your deductible). There are certain exceptions to this rule; for example, SGI will not cover costs or damages arising out of an accident caused by an impaired driver.

You can choose not to be covered by no-fault by completing SGI’s tort declaration form.
