Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is responsible for administering export requirements on behalf of many other government departments and agencies. Saskatchewan exporters must ensure that they are in compliance with CBSA requirements before attempting to export any goods from Canada.

Many goods can be exported from Canada without a special permit or licence. Some goods are controlled, regulated or prohibited to be exported by the Canada Border Services Agency and require a special permit or licence to export.  The type of goods, the country of origin (if different from Canada) and the destination country, are all factors that will determine whether the export is regulated or prohibited.

Canadian exporters must also keep in mind that there are also reporting requirements for many goods that are leaving the country, the reporting requirements and timeframe for reporting will vary depending on the mode of transportation used to export the goods.

Aside from domestic restrictions, the exporter should also be aware of the destination country’s laws and regulations respecting imports to the destination country. It may be prudent to speak with licensed counsel in the destination country prior to agreeing to export any goods to a foreign country.
