HISTORY
The Firm traces its roots back to 1926, when the Honourable Emmett Hall, Q.C. relocated his well established barrister's practice to Saskatoon. Over the next several decades, the Firm’s practice expanded with the addition of the Honourable Mr. Percy Maguire, Q.C., who practiced primarily as a solicitor, and Mr. James B. Wedge, Q.C., who practiced primarily matrimonial and criminal defence law.
In 1957 Mr. Justice Hall was appointed to the Bench, and the Firm was thereafter renamed Maguire, Wedge, McKercher & McKercher, reflecting the addition of Donald S. McKercher, Q.C. and Robert H. McKercher, Q.C. In 1962, the Firm was joined by John Stack who quickly developed an extensive commercial practice.
In 1989, the Regina Firm of Whitmore & Company joined forces with Saskatoon’s McKercher Firm. The addition of Peter Whitmore’s Regina practice solidified the Firm’s representation in the Province’s major cities. In 2008 when Mr. Justice Whitmore was appointed to the Bench, the firm shortened it's name to simply McKercher LLP.
Over the course of this 80 year history, the Firm has been involved in a number of significant projects which have left an indelible mark on this Province. The Firm's involvement in Saskatoon’s Midtown Plaza and Scotia Centre revitalization projects are a tangible legacy of progress. The Firm was pivotal in the development of the first reserve developed on municipal lands in Canada. The Firm played a key role in the privatization of many of the Province’s Crown Corporations in the late 1980s.
The Firm has also represented the University of Saskatchewan since the early 1970s. it has been extensively involved with the University's expansion and with its associated economic development projects including: Innovation Place, one of the most rapidly growing and most successful university-related research parks in North America; and the Synchrotron, Canada's largest scientific research facility development in more than 30 years.
The Firm continues to demonstrate growth and practice development, becoming a respected leader in Canada’s legal profession.
